Shady Business

Nothing too fancy here... just some stuff where I had to do some lighting effects:

Sometimes to draw the lighting effect, ya gotta rework the board drawing. In this case, the Powerpuff Girls are so specific in their posing (Due to their flat, UPA-inspired design) that only those of us who worked on the show since the beginning knew how to pose them correctly. There are often rules as to how a character can be posed in order to work with their unique designs. The PPGs probably gave freelance board artists more headaches than any other show at the time... (other than DEXTER'S LAB)

This is an example of what we would call "Models as layout":

POWERPUFF Z EPISODES ON YOUTUBE

A weird experience for those of us that worked on the original, but it's pretty cool. You can check out full episodes and more here.

That anime Power Puff Girls actually looks good...for girls I mean. (cough, cough) So did Cartoon Network have any say in the production of it?

I hear ya on posing those characters. Due to the design, a slight turn can make or break the model. Love the black and white here. Kudos

Nice Bold lighting treatment.

Really Strange Anime!
That has to be one of the longest transformation sequences I've seen.

Beautiful and crisp work! Yeah, working on PPG wasn't easy. Props & FX was tough but it was fun. I learned alot.

Great work as always Chris. I didnt realize that the boards on shows like PPG and Dexters had to be so tight!

Awesome drawings, sir! I think I can remember some of those from the episodes. The Japanese Powerpuffs just seem way too anime to me now. Personally I still like the original with it's American-anime charm.

Love your production works ... love the board lighting design.

The Anime Power Puff's very interesting ... is that a teenage version?! It looks kind of like sailor moon!! LOL Fun looking though.

Hey, gang... thanks for all the comments. Glad to see my occasional dips into the "archives" are useful/enjoyable.

Marmax- As far as I know, PPGZ was a co-production between CNS and Toei Animation. I think the network's say in it was "Yes, give us money. Thank you."

Minja!- We won't be down at Comic-con this year :( I'll make sure I do something nerdy this weekend to make up for it.

Von Kreep- Let me guess... you favorite characters.... Abra-Kadaver and The Boogeyman? The Kreepsville Kartoon's looking cool. Darryl's got the crazy TALENT!

Dee- Fun meeting you too; Funny how we all sort of know each other whether we know it or not...

Mukpuddy- Thanks! Always dig you guyz' stuff! I just wish your blog thumbnails were bigger :(

Jorge- The boards don't have to be that tight, just semi-on model. The main reason I re-drew that pose was 'cause the PPG's bodies don't "work" that way. I wanna RIFF t-shirt, man!!

Jo Bling- I've already been to your blog before; Great stuff, man!

Paco- Thank you for dropping by; gave me the chance to discover your blog. Great stuff!

...and whoever's going to Comic-con, check the names in my links section and see which of my pals will be there... be sure to drop by their booths and buy ALL of their stuff!!
